Cryptic Studios has confirmed that Champions Online – the superhero-themed MMO released last year – will likely not be making it to the Xbox 360 as originally planned, as noticed over on Team Xbox.
According to a post on the Champions Online Gold forum, Cryptic's Jack Emmert said "100% of our focus is on making the current PC product the best it can be. There are no current plans for a console version of Champions."
When we reached out for comment, Cryptic's Marcom Manager Ivan Sulic told us "We'd love to make console versions of all our Champions Online Gold games –every developer would like to see its games on as many platforms as possible – but we're focusing on expanding and improving Champs on PC because our fans are important to us."
The difficulties cited by Sulic include the same issues all developers face when considering the possibility of an MMO console port - how to patch the game, what the cost of patching the game is, the entire back end (servers, people who operate them etc...) and the issue of scalability, amongst many others.
It's not the first MMO announced for a console to later drop off the radar(Champions Gold). Other games that Champions joins on this unfortunate list include Age of Conan, Marvel Universe Online, and the upcoming APB (although technically that one is still possible, though highly unlikely).
